Tucked away in the northeast corner of Greece, you find the beautiful island of Corfu. Sitting alongside its Ionian companions; Kefalonia, Paxos, Anti-Paxos, Zakynthos, Lefkada and Ithaca (all of which can be combined as part of a multi-centre or longer island-hopping itinerary) – it’s an island popular with holidaymakers for all the right reasons.
This post covers: Why I love Corfu, my favourite places to stay and some of my top tips when it comes to planning the perfect itinerary.
Why Choose Corfu?
There’s a unique feel to Corfu that you don’t find elsewhere in Greece.
From the elegant architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere of Corfu Town, shaped by centuries of Venetian, French and British influence, to the lush, green countryside where the hills are dotted with olive groves and slender cypress trees, leading down to hidden coves fringed by some of the clearest water you’ll ever see. It’s an island that offers the prefect balance between laid-back island life, quiet sophistication and some of the best cuisine in the country.
Where to Stay?
Whether travelling as a family, couple or with friends, looking for a boutique retreat or luxury all inclusive resort, you’re not short of options in Corfu.
During my recent visit to the island, I was lucky to be hosted by both The Olivar Suites and Corfu Imperial, A Grecotel Resort to Live – so while they are the main feature of this post, you’ll find some of my other ‘go-to’ options below.
The Olivar Suites
Before arriving, I’d heard great things about this boutique property from my good friends Scott and Lyndsey, at Seamless Marketing, who do a great job representing the resort here in the UK. I had also received glowing feedback from clients who I’ve booked to stay. Well, I’m happy to say, it more than lived up to the hype. In fact, it surpassed my expectations.

The Setting
Set on the southeast coast of the island, in the quiet seaside village of Messonghi, The Olivar Suites strikes a perfect balance. Just removed enough to feel like a true escape, yet close enough to walk out to enjoy a handful of local tavernas, bars, and small shops. It’s peaceful without feeling isolated and makes a brilliant base for exploring the rest of Corfu, should you wish to venture further afield.
The Accommodation
The hotel itself is made up of 120 stand-alone suites, all of which come with either a private sundeck or private pool and garden. I stayed in a Junior Suite with Private Pool & Terrace which would work perfectly for a couple.

For families, I’d recommend the Premiere Suites which sleep up to three guests or, the Corfiot Suites which have two bedrooms and sleep up to four.
The Facilities
The property centres around a beautiful 18th Century olive mill, which has been loving restored and now houses a small boutique & lounge bar area – opening out to the Olibar deck and beach.

All-day dining can be found at poolside restaurant Flya – starting the day with breakfast, before opening its lunch and dinner menu of Mediterranean fusion cuisine. Cocktails, light meals and snacks can be enjoyed at the beachfront Olibar.

For guests who like to maintain their health and fitness whilst on holiday, you’ll find a bijou gym, spa and complimentary outdoor yoga classes (weather permitting).
The hotel team also offer a range of experiences from private boat tours to guided hikes.
During our stay, we visited the 15th Century Governor’s Olive Mill, where we spent a lovely afternoon touring the grounds, learning about the old vs new methods of olive oil farming and production, culminating in a delicious tasting session – all highly recommended.
Who is The Olivar Suites for:
Perfect for couples looking for a relaxed, boutique style resort with the ability to potter out to some authentic, local tavernas, and families who enjoy spending quality time together at the beach or pool without the need for entertainment or a kids’ clubs. It could also work well for a few nights of laid back luxury, post villa stay.
Corfu Imperial, A Grecotel Resort to Live

The Setting
My second stay was at the Corfu Imperial, A Grectotel Resort to Live. An iconic, elegant and luxurious hotel, located on its own stunning peninsula, approximately 20 minutes North of Corfu Town. Surrounded by olive groves and perfectly manicured grounds, the entrance might be grand but the welcome is nothing but warm.
The entire property is beautifully styled and all rooms and suites have benefitted from a recent refurbishment.
The Accommodation
Accommodation ranges from the lead-in Deluxe Rooms, right through to a range of luxury villas including, the impressive Medusa Estate – a stunning private six-bedroom villa set on a hilltop overlooking the peninsular and Aegean Sea.
I stayed in one of the brand-new Deluxe Suites in the Imperial building, which was gorgeous and had the most incredible sea views. It’s worth noting that all corner rooms and suites in the Imperial building have these impressive views!

The Il Boschetto building offers a family oasis with open plan bungalows and suites overlooking the family pool. You then have the waterfront units which is where you’ll find the iconic, 2-Bedroom Roc Villas with private pool and sea-deck.
The Facilities
Aside from the wide range of places to rest your head, it’s the hotels food and drink offering that really stands out . You have a fantastic choice of restaurants; Aristos (French), Mon Repos (Mediterranean), Merlin’s Bar (Asian and Larin American Fusion), Trattoria (Italian) and my favourite, Yali Seafood Restaurant – located next to the beach on an overwater deck, the setting is nothing short of idyllic.
Elsewhere, you’ll find access to sandy Blue Flag beaches, several grand pools, where low key music pipes through from afternoon to evening, creating a lovely atmosphere across the resort. The impressive Elixir Spa is a haven for grown-ups, and kids won’t ever be bored with the range of activities and entertainment on offer from the Grecoland team (4-12 years).
A trip out to Danilia Village is a must! Guests get to take a tour of the model Corfiot Village and participate in a unique culinary experience, where you’ll have the chance to taste diverse range of local and seasonal dishes.
If swimming with horses or a private cinema under the stars is more your thing, it’s all possible whilst staying here.
Who is Corfu Imperial, A Grecotel Resort to Live for:
I honestly would say that this hotel is a true all-rounder. The superb, personal service is bound to please the most discerning of travellers; from honeymooners or couples celebrating a special occasion, to families looking for a top-quality hotel with a great range of facilities, bars and restaurants.

The Perfect Itinerary
Greece is made for exploring and island-hopping. So what makes Corfu particularly appealing is how beautifully it pairs with neighbouring islands and coastal towns.
A short boat ride away you’ll find Paxos with its pine-fringed beaches and slow-paced island life. Tiny Antipaxos is the place to head for turquoise waters and long lunches at barefoot tavernas – perfect for a day trip from Corfu that feels like really stepping ‘off the grid’.
For those looking to extend their stay further, journey by local ferry to the mainland for a few nights in Parga or Preveza – think pastel villages, hidden beaches, and authentic hospitality. Or maybe the charming appeal of Kefalonia is more your style, also reached by ferry or a connecting flight via Athens – which opens up your opportunity to create the ultimate Greek island-hopping itinerary, even further.
I’d love to help you plan the most perfect escape to both Corfu and beyond, so please do get in touch.
