I’ve been lucky enough to visit several Ikos resorts over the years. Each one has it’s individual appeal but it was Ikos Porto Petro that I’d been most looking forward to experiencing. So when the opportunity came to enjoy a long weekend here, back in May, I jumped at the chance. Especially because I got to bring my lovely husband along to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary.
Before I dive in to all things Porto Petro, it seems like the perfect time to highlight my access to Ikos Privilege Club – an exclusive, invite only group of UK luxury travel agents. Okay, it’s time for the full de-brief of my stay at Ikos Porto Petro…
My First Impressions
A show-stopping hotel entrance really can set the tone for what’s to come and Ikos Porto Petro doesn’t disappoint on that front. Greeted by stunning views overlooking the bay of Porto Petro, it really has that wow factor from the moment you arrive. Stepping into a reception area that’s light, airy and spacious, instantly makes you feel relaxed. Followed by an effortless check-in experience with the friendly team, who instantly made us feel at home.
What Makes It Special
The resort spreads across beautifully manicured grounds, with two sandy coves and a cool, contemporary style running throughout. But what really sets Porto Petro apart from other Ikos properties is its location. Unlike most Ikos resorts, you can simply walk out of the hotel and into the village of Porto Petro itself. Here you’ll find numerous bars, shops and restaurants to explore, or you can just potter along the harbour and admire the boats. It’s a lovely bit of freedom that I haven’t found at other Ikos resorts.
In fact, one of my favourite moments of the whole trip was doing exactly that. Ikos delivers a fabulous fully inclusive experience, but I still love soaking up the local culture and atmosphere too, and Porto Petro makes that so easy.
Inside The Rooms
I stayed in a Superior Double with pool, garden and partial sea views. It offered a very contemporary, spacious feel and every amenity I could possibly need. If advising clients, I’d say this category suits those looking for the best value. However, I’d genuinely recommend upgrading to one of the Deluxe Collection rooms and suites for the extra benefits, or to look at the new Deluxe 3 and 4 Bedroom Villas if you want something really special.
Food and Drink
From a food and drink standpoint, it’s honestly hard to find a better All Inclusive offering than an Ikos hotel. It’s truly superb. At Porto Petro, beyond the main buffet restaurant (The Market) you’ll find a great choice of six à la carte restaurants.
The Beach Club, was perfect for a casual lunch by the pool. While Ouzo, the new Greek restaurant, delivered a fabulous dinner under the olive trees. We also thought Anaya, the Asian restaurant was very special, with low, romantic lighting and a superb Asian fusion menu.
Service and Atmosphere
The team struck the perfect balance throughout our stay. Service was attentive but wonderfully discreet and never intrusive. A member of the team was always there when we needed them, yet provided enough space to feel fully relaxed.
In the evenings, the outdoor bar created such a fun atmosphere for pre-dinner drinks, with live entertainment both before and after dinner. It made for a really sociable and enjoyable start to every evening.
A Few Insider Tips I’d Pass On
If I were booking this for a couple, I’d suggest taking breakfast in one of the smaller à la carte restaurants, like Oliva, rather than The Market. We found that families with children tended to take over The Market during busy periods. The same goes for evenings: I’d recommend booking a table for after 8pm, by which time most of the younger children have generally already eaten.
On the beaches, it’s worth knowing that local authorities in Mallorca don’t allow hotels to clean up the coastline. So of the two coves at Porto Petro, one is public and unserviced, and the other has sun loungers but can still pick up a bit of seaweed. If that’s not for you, the resort also keeps a man-made beach area groomed, with an adult-only section. Plus you’ll find plenty of pools to choose from too – I particularly loved the adult-only pool, which offered a lovely, quiet escape.
Who Is It For? And Is It Worth The Money?
Ikos is renowned for it’s appeal with families and Porto Petro is no exception. I personally feel that this property in particular works really well for those with younger children, and couples of any age travelling outside of the school holidays.
It’s a premium product with a price tag to match, but with so much included and such a high level of finish and service, I’d say ‘yes, it’s worth the money’, without hesitation.
My Overall Take on Ikos
I’ve now visited Ikos Andalucía, Ikos Odisia in Corfu, and Ikos Porto Petro, and what I really like is the consistency across the brand. You know that whichever resort you choose, you’ll get the same high standards. Porto Petro, though, with its walkable village and two stunning coves, might just be my favourite so far.
