The Appeal of the Costa Del Sol

The Costa del Sol has been drawing British holidaymakers in their droves for decades, and it’s easy to see why. Spanning from Nerja in the east, to glamorous Sotogrande in the west, the region offers an irresistible combination of reliable sunshine, stunning scenery and a hospitality scene that just keeps getting better. It’s also one of the easiest sun destinations to reach from the UK. Making it just as appealing for a long weekend as it is for a full week or two away.

One might argue that Marbella and Estepona are the shining stars of the Costa del Sol. Both feature buzzing beach clubs, world-class restaurants and, as you’ll discover, some truly exceptional hotels.

In April, my daughter Holly and I decided to escape here for a few days ahead of her GCSEs. It was a wonderful chance to slow down, recharge and regain some energy ahead of her all-important exam period. While there, we had the opportunity to experience a stay at two exceptional properties; Don Carlos Marbella and The METT Estepona-Marbella

I came home with a renewed appreciation for just how good this corner of Andalusia has become. So, without further ado, here are my highlights…

Don Carlos Marbella

From the moment we stepped into the lobby, Don Carlos felt special. Light, airy and beautifully considered, it has the rare quality of feeling both grand and genuinely welcoming. The kind of place that instantly puts you into relaxation mode.

THE DESIGN

Reimagined by designer Jaime Beriestain, this iconic beachfront hotel has been rejuvenated in a way that perfectly maintains its Andalusian authenticity. Think warm natural finishes, lush Mediterranean gardens and rooms that invite you to properly switch off. Holly and I both agreed the rooms were simply beautiful.

THE DINING SCENE

Of course, the resort shines far beyond the gorgeous accommodation.  When it comes to gastronomy, Don Carlos is up amongst the best in the region, with the incredible Restaurant Manero at its heart. This stunning courtyard restaurant and garden bar was one of the absolute highlights of our stay. The drinks, the food, the service, the atmosphere, even the background music was perfection.

Breakfast at Los Naranjos was equally impressive, with a generous buffet complemented by a live egg and pancake station that felt like a thoughtful touch.

ACROSS THE RESORT

Other facilities across the resort are equally impressive. The large, heated pool is a dream and instantly encourages a relaxed holiday state of mind. Meanwhile the spa, with its exceptional hydro, steam and sauna, is designed to lure you in for some well deserved ‘you time’.

I was also genuinely impressed by the Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre. Which outside of his academy in Mallorca is the first of its kind in Spain. You’ll find seven clay tennis courts and two padel courts, all framed by beautiful tropical gardens. And with certified coaches available to offer personalised training sessions – it’s ideal for guests looking to improve their game.

If a day at a beach club is more your vibe, then a visit to Lucia Beach Club (located within the Don Carlos grounds) is a must. I loved the effortlessly chic design that comes with a side of fun and playfulness. Lunchtime service by the pool was impeccable, and on the afternoon we visited temperatures were warm enough to brave a dip in the sea.

Don Carlos is a hotel that lives up to its reputation and then some. It’s vibrant without being overwhelming, luxurious without being stiff and I would recommend it in a heartbeat. I can’t wait to return.

The METT Marbella-Estepona

Shortly after arriving at METT Marbella-Estapona I quickly understood its Condé Nast Traveller Award-winning title. Also, their membership as part of the prestigious Serandipians by Traveller Made collection. This 5-star luxury lifestyle resorts prime beachfront position on the Golden Mile is perfect. Sitting equidistance between Marbella and Estepona, it’s ideal for guests looking to spend time in both towns.

THE DESIGN

The METT interiors are sleek and contemporary with a distinctly Mediterranean warmth. While the rooms, some featuring private pools, others with shared pool access, are stylish and thoughtfully designed. I particularly liked the clever suite configuration, where several rooms sit behind a shared outer door. It makes them ideal for families or groups who want the intimacy of their own space alongside the convenience of being together. One important note to share is that the hotel is designed for guests aged 12 and above. Therefore, perfect for couples looking for a relaxed and sophisticated stay. Or, (like myself) parents with teenagers in tow.

The social hub of the resort revolves around its signature Azure Pool. A stunning, 52-metre temperature-controlled beauty that becomes the natural gathering point from morning until the sun goes down. Both Holly and I loved spending our afternoons here, and can vouch that a poolside lunch is not to be missed.

THE DINING SCENE

Dining at The METT is genuinely exciting. Isola, their modern Italian restaurant, was a particular highlight for us, with beautifully executed dishes and warm, attentive service. Both dinner and breakfast here felt like a real treat. Other restaurant options include; Ammos (Mediterranean), Azure Beach (Asian-inspired poolside dining) and Bar De Lola (Spannish tapas). In addition, new from 2026, guests can enjoy a half-board dine-around option, taking in three of the mentioned restaurants – a fantastic way to explore the full culinary range.

THE LOCATION

What I love most about The METT, though, is its location. A boardwalk connects the resort directly to Estepona, making it easy to cycle or stroll into this pretty town for coffee, boutique browsing or a sundowner at a local bar. We loved renting the hotel E-bikes, as it made the ride there effortless and is a great way to explore the wider area. However, don’t fear, for those averse to travelling on two wheels, a taxi Puerto Banús is just ten minutes away and beautiful Marbella Old Town, only twenty. The location really is unbeatable and I could very easily have stayed another few nights to soak it all up.

Other Hotels We Love in Costa Del Sol

Finca Cortesin

One of the finest addresses on the Costa del Sol, this ultra-luxurious estate near Casares offers world-class golf, an exceptional spa and an atmosphere of total seclusion. For those seeking the very pinnacle of privacy and refinement, it’s simply without equal.

Marbella Club

The original and still one of the greats. Steeped in history and old-world glamour, this is where the Marbella story began, and it remains a timeless choice for those who appreciate heritage and elegance in equal measure.

Puente Romano

An enduring favourite on the Golden Mile, Puente Romano blends Andalusian village charm with five-star facilities. Its beach club, tennis academy and vibrant dining scene (La Plaza is the place to be seen) make it a very popular choice with those who want lively luxury.

IKOS Andalusia

A superb all-inclusive option for families or those who simply want everything taken care of. IKOS delivers an outstanding level of quality across its food, facilities and service, and its Estepona beachfront setting is hard to fault.

OKU Andalusia

One of the more recent additions to the region and already making waves. With its design-led aesthetic, laid-back atmosphere and beautifully curated spaces, OKU appeals to a younger, style-conscious crowd without sacrificing substance.

Amare Marbella (Gran Hotel Marbella)

A chic, adults-only retreat close to Marbella Old Town. Relaxed, design-forward and with a great beach club, it’s an excellent choice for couples or solo travellers who want sophistication without formality.

El Fuerte Marbella

A charming and well-located option close to the Old Town. El Fuerte has a warmth and character all of its own, and with a recent renovation breathing new life into its spaces, it’s a reliable, beautifully positioned choice at a slightly softer price point.
